Does Black Gold Fade? What to Expect Over a Lifetime

Yes, black gold fades. We'd rather tell you that now than have you find out in month eight.

Black gold is a finish, not a metal in its own right. Knowing that from the beginning is the difference between a piece that disappoints and one that ages the way you want it to.

What is black gold?

Black gold is jewellery whose surface has been given a deep black finish, usually by plating it with a thin layer of dark metal. At Noirva, that finish is black ruthenium, a member of the platinum family of metals, plated over the metal you choose at checkout: 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K white gold. The colour sits on the surface. The metal beneath keeps its natural colour.

That's true of most black gold jewellery. Truly black gold alloys exist but are rarely used, so if you see black gold, assume it's a surface finish unless the seller says otherwise.

How long does black gold last?

Piece Typical time before the finish softens noticeably
Ring worn every day 6–24 months
Ring worn occasionally Considerably longer
Pendants and earrings Far longer, because they meet much less friction

The finish doesn't disappear all at once. It softens gradually, first where the piece meets the world most: the underside of a band, its edges and any raised details.

What makes black gold fade faster

  • Hand sanitiser, lotion and perfume
  • Chlorine in pools and hot tubs
  • Household cleaners
  • Training, climbing and carrying heavy bags
  • Stacking rings tightly so they rub against each other

How to make the finish last

  • Put your ring on last, after lotion and perfume.
  • Take it off to swim, clean, or train.
  • Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid jewellery cleaners and ultrasonic machines.
  • Store it on its own so it doesn't rub against other pieces.

Renewing black gold

When the finish softens, professional replating with black ruthenium restores it completely. It's part of owning black gold, much as a fine leather piece is conditioned over the years. Some owners come to prefer the gentle, lived-in patina that develops first.

Gradual softening is the natural life of any plated finish, which is why we explain it here rather than in the small print. And if the plating on your piece peels or shows significant loss within six months of delivery, we'll replate it once, free of charge. See our Warranty Policy for details.

If you'd rather the black never changes

When you order, choose a white gold or silver finish without the black plating, and let the stone carry the darkness. A salt and pepper diamond or black moissanite in a bright setting is quietly striking, and it will look the same in twenty years.

Frequently asked questions

Does black gold fade?
Yes. Black gold is a plated surface finish, and it gradually softens with wear. A ring worn daily typically begins to lighten noticeably within 6 to 24 months.

Can black gold be restored?
Yes. Professional replating restores the full black finish. Many owners replate every year or two, depending on how often they wear the piece. If the plating peels or shows significant loss within six months of delivery, Noirva replates it once for free.

Is black gold real gold?
Black gold describes the finish, not the metal. At Noirva, the black ruthenium finish sits over the metal you choose: 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K white gold. If you want solid gold beneath the finish, choose white gold.

Does black gold tarnish or turn your finger green?
The black finish wears rather than tarnishes. Neither white gold nor sterling silver typically turns skin green, though sterling silver can darken over time once the plating has worn and it's exposed to air and moisture. Replating covers it again.

Is black gold a good choice for an engagement ring?
It is, as long as you're happy to replate it from time to time. If you want a ring you never have to maintain, choose a white gold or silver finish without the black plating, paired with a dark stone.
